Biography
Robert Trocina is the founding music director of Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra (GA) and artistic director of Gwinnett Symphony Musical Arts Consortium (since 2006). Mr. Trocina is music director of Northeast Atlanta Ballet (since 2007), where he has lead nearly 130 full-length productions of works such as Prokofiev’s Cinderella, Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and NEAB’S original production of Peter Pan. Mr. Trocina is newly appointed music director of The Georgia Ballet Orchestra, where he will lead his first production in December of 2019. Mr. Trocina served as associate conductor of Atlanta Wind Symphony (1998-2003), and music director of Gwinnett Children's and Youth Orchestras from (1997-2006).
In addition to these appointments, Mr. Trocina maintains an active guest conducting presence both at home and abroad. He recently served as guest conductor of Starkenburg Philharmoniker (Germany), where he lead concerts on the Neujahrskonzerts Series in 2018 and 2019, and as guest conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Chernivtsi Philharmonic Society (Ukraine) in April of 2019. His upcoming international guest conducting appointments include Bad Vilbeler Kammerorchester (Germany), and N.G. Zhiganov Kazan State Conservatory Orchestra (Russia). Mr. Trocina made his opera debut as guest conductor of Capitol City Opera (GA), where he lead productions of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, and Mozart’s The Impreserio. He served as guest conductor and artistic director of Korean American Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for the 50th Anniversary Korean American Friendship Concert in Georgia, a special concert featuring over 260 musicians. He served as guest conductor for National Guild for Community Arts Education National Conference, and locally, served as guest conductor of Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra and Atlanta Musicians Orchestra. Mr. Trocina has performed as a conductor or musician in 38 United States, as well as Canada, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Ukraine and Sweden.
Mr. Trocina is co-founder and director of New School of Music, a music conservatory with six campuses located throughout Georgia, which he co-founded with Mr. Rick Smith in 1997. NSM has an average enrollment of approximately 1200 students and has taught over one million applied music lessons and classes since its inception.
Under Mr. Trocina’s artistic direction, Gwinnett Symphony Musical Arts Consortium (GSMAC) has grown to include the symphony orchestra, symphony chorus, chamber orchestra, wind orchestra, chamber singers, jazz orchestra, and youth orchestra, and GSMAC concert seasons comprise of approximately 25 performances annually. Mr. Trocina established Infinite Energy Center as the performance home for GSMAC ensembles, a residency the ensembles have held since 2007. Mr. Trocina has collaborated GSMAC with scores of guest artists, conductors and ensembles. With a strong emphases on youth education, Mr. Trocina has established a youth orchestra program that serves hundreds of youth musicians, an annual “Side-by-Side” concert featuring teachers and their students, “Young Persons” concerts, and youth concerto competitions. He has developed many concerts featuring American and world premier performances of new compositions, notably the world premiere of Andrew Webb-Mitchell’s, Songs of Awe and Wonder, for which the composer traveled from China to attend the premiere.
Mr. Trocina received a Bachelor of Music Education from Kennesaw State University and completed further studies in conducting and performance at Georgia State University and Columbus State University. He studied conducting under Thomas Wubbenhorst, Patricio Cobos, William Fred Scott and Steven Byess, and studied trumpet under Mark Hughes, Jim Thompson and Stephen Winnick. He is a member of The League of American Orchestras, Georgia Music Educators Association and National Association of School Music Dealers.
